The GeForce RTX 3080 is one of the most interesting graphics cards Nvidia has made of late, especially in terms of power and price.
So don't be surprised if it's tricky to find for another few weeks yet. Then we get to AMD's Radeon RX 5000 series, and like in prior months it makes absolutely no sense for a gamer to consider these GPUs as a used upgrade option. The prices of cards like the 5700 XT remain high as the RDNA architecture is good for mining, punching well above its weight. If owners of the 5700 XT haven't already upgraded to something like the RX 6700 XT basically for free, then they should be seriously considering it if gaming is their primary use for these cards. However the mid-priced options like the GTX 1070 Ti remain largely unchanged. It also appears that the volume of these older GPUs being sold is slowly reducing as first-time owners upgrade to newer GPUs.
The average sale price is currently $1,643, however LHR cards are going for $1,400 to $1,500, while non-LHR variants are in the $1,800+ range. For gamers, there is no reason to spend that extra money on the non-LHR variant, because the LHR cards are identical for gaming. The average sale price on eBay for this GPU was $950, while most LHR cards were selling for around $850. However, if you want a non-LHR model like the Founders Edition card and others, you're looking at having to spend at least $1,250. That's a 47% price hike for 43% higher mining performance after factoring in the latest LHR bypasses.
It's unlikely we'll see these GPUs hit the MSRP again soon, with retailers describing this $680 price as more the "true" MSRP based on the shipments they are seeing. Won't need a new PSU (unless yours doesn't supply enough power) as the 3rd party cards will likely keep the same connector OR include an adapter which is what Nvidia is doing with the founders edition cards. I'd wait out the "first" models of this new gen given your card is very current and/or will also lose a significant amount of value. They showed this to say it's time to upgrade from the 10 series as many people didn't bother with the 20 series due to price vs performance increase.
By running Ray Tracing on the 10 series they are basically saying it's going to have to do it at some point now and look at crap it is compared to our shiny new product. The RTX 3060 Ti is no longer the newest RTX 3000 series card, but that doesn't mean stock is any easier to find. Like its younger base 3060 sibling, official stores seem to be sold out across the board. While some stores, like Best Buy, were occasionally refreshing inventory shortly after launch, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. That's a shame, because while we loved the RTX 3060 Ti's value in our review, not being able to buy it from anyone other than a scalper makes that point moot. Micro Center is a bit of an oddity, in that most of its products are only available in store.
There's a lot of options and a lot of local stores to check, but unfortunately, everything still seems to be sold out for now. The GeForce RTX 30-series GPUs that third-party manufacturers are selling all use the Nvidia 30-series 'reference' graphics cards as their foundation. For a card that has LESS performance than an RTX 3080 to be sold for MORE than one, is absolutely bloody abhorrent. The industry is a complete meme at the moment, sure I completely understand supply and demand, however this is completely ridiculous. I got a mid range 20 series card and I don't really see the need to upgrade. Nothing's coming out that really requires me to have the hottest card, unless it's to use a higher refresh rate and even that isn't the end of the world. These prices are insane when it's just not worth it for a newer card. While we love building our own PCs, you can find plenty of value right now getting someone else to build it for you.
Pre-built PCs have so far this year been the best way to secure yourself a graphics card at a half-decent price, and there are plenty of good options out there.
